NECA Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Classic Collection Antrax & Scumbug Figures Review

This year is already almost half over and the Turtles offerings from NECA are showing no signs of slowing down, and one of this years biggest surprises to fans is Antrax and Scumbug, two characters that appeared in only one episode of the classic cartoon series. This episode was titled Night of the Rogues, and in this one we’re introduced to these two characters, as well as additional villains that are brought back into the series as Shredder gathers them to work together to fight and take out the Turtles on his behalf. Antrax is Krang’s Executioner from Dimension X, and Scumbug is a mutated exterminator.

Antrax and Scumbug are inspired from the classic cartoon and are based on the episode Night of the Rogues, which introduced these villains along with bringing back other villains that were all hired by Shredder to take on the turtles. Antrax is Krang’s Executioner from Dimension X and Scumbug is a mutated Exterminator. Both characters have such a unique character design that is nicely captured in these figures sculpts, and gives our villain roster one step closer to a complete series collection. While these characters are obscure, they are memorable to the franchise and to us die-hard fans and you never see figures of them made in turtles line, so it’s great to see some modern updates to the characters in this line, and offered as a 2-pack so you can get both without the hassle of tracking them down individually.

Antrax is an alien with four arms, with some insect features such as the antenna’s sticking out the sides of his head, the sides of his mouth, and that bee-like tail in the back. The character is also given a purple mask covering his face, like the robotic foot soldiers, and he has a purple piece around his neck, also like the foot as they all fight for the same team. He also has a brown strap over his torso with a belt buckle, a belt with a torn purple plastic piece, a skull belt buckle and a pouch, knee pads and purple boots, with the left toes sticking out. The paint applications are nicely done, clean and crisp.

Antrax includes four accessories, a battle axe, a club, a large knife and a dagger. The club includes spikes, and the dagger can be placed inside the holster in his back, which is a nice touch. The battle axe is perfect for an executioner as its the right size to place in two of his hands on either side, and the larger knife also has spikes, with a larger blade on top.

His articulation is standard for the line, including a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, swivel waist, ball jointed insect tail, ball jointed hips, double hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.

Scumbug has a lot of detail that went into this characters design, which is why you probably only saw the character appear only once as hand drawing him in was time consuming. He has several key elements of an insect, including the antenna’s on his head, teeth on the sides of his mouth, big yellow eyes with red veins, the torso, left forearm and hand, knees, and that big roach shell on his back. The light blue shirt is torn and reveals the purple insect belly, which the part of the design is on the forearm, and knees. The head sculpt looks amazingly detailed and also matches the source material quite nicely, especially the detail to the mouth and eyes. Scumbug also has an acid gun that is connected to a hose that is connected to his pack, which is sculpted to the shell on his back, and none of this is removable.

Scumbug is also given some great accessories, which includes that acid gun mentioned above, a energy taser that was used to create a net to capture the turtles in the episode, 3 roaches, and a device that is given such a great sculpt, including buttons a screen and an overall great design.

Scumbug’s articulation includes a ball jointed mouth, hinged jaw, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.

Overall, Antrax and Scumbug look amazing and a great addition to this line. The sculpts and attention to detail is just remarkable and NECA continues to offer such great figures. The line will surely never run out of villains when you can get to obscure characters such as these. If you’re looking to update your old toy line, which these two were apart of, and love the show, then make sure to grab these two while you can!
