Mattel – San Diego Comic-Con 2022 Exclusive Back in Action! Major Matt Mason Big Jim & Pulsar Figures Review

Mattel is bring back retro style with their San Diego Comic-Con 2022 Exclusive Back in Action! Major Matt Mason Big Jim & Pulsar Figures, which are inspired as if they were offered back in the 1980’s. These characters were popular in the 1960’s and 1970’s and are making a comeback this year for convention goers, including Major Matt Mason (since 1966), Big Jim (1971), and Pulsar (1976), which feature 5 points of articulation and are given muscular sculpts.

Thank you to Mattel for sending along their Back in Action! set for review.

Availability: San Diego Comic-Con,  July 22, 2022 at Mattel Creations

The figure are in retro-style packaging, including three individually carded blister cards inside the blue box, which includes logo’s, images and text. The three blister cards can be removed from the three individual boxes, which includes images and logo’s of the characters on the front and back. Presentation wise this packaging is excellent and really captures a retro vibe to it, which is where the packaging team was headed.

Major Matt Mason comes in an astronaut suit, which is white with black stripes, the American flag on his chest, a blue painted harness, dark grey and white buckles with a blue tube attached to it, and additional details all painted onto the body, including a closed zipper going down the front.

Big Jim comes in a dark blue shirt with the wolf head logo on his chest and belt buckle, brown harness painted on, white pants and brown shoes.

Pulsar comes with the front of his chest transparent, and you can see his intestines, including his lungs and stomach, which is both cool and disgusting at the same time. His arms and back show his skin, and his pants are split in red and black deco, with white shoes with black lines.

Each of their head sculpts are stylized and pay tribute to their likenesses as if they were released in the 1980’s, and not as 12″ dolls as they were back in the 60’s and 70’s. Each figure is also given 5 points of articulation, including a swivel head, arms and hips, which was common in the 80’s.

Overall,

This is a great offering and brings back three iconic timeless characters that are not normally seen these days. These are great comic-con exclusives as it’s nostalgic to those that had these characters in their prime, but also is of interest to fans of toys in the 80’s.
