NECA Toys Universal Monsters x Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ultimate Splinter as Van Helsing Figure Review

NECA Toys has expanded the premise of two franchises and lines that they’re been offering, with their Universal Monsters x Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles co-brand line that offers the best of both. Splinter as Van Helsing makes perfect sense given the wisdom of both characters and their ability to adapt to any situation. This line also includes Leonardo as the Hunchback, Raphael as Frankenstein, and April O’Neil as the Bride of Frankenstein, Michelangelo as The Mummy and Donatello as the Invisible Man.

Splinter as Van Helsing is packaged in a window box with an opening flap, with nicely done artwork and images of the figure on the front, sides, and back. Inside, he comes packaged in a plastic tray along with his accessories, and the opening flap to the right has another image of him.

Splinter as Van Helsing is one of my favorite combo offerings in this line, as it brings out the best in both characters that works great together. The wise Splinter and vampire hunter Professor Van Helsing would make a great team up if that were ever going to happen, and getting a mixture of both makes one formidable foe for any villain.

Splinter as Van Helsing comes in a brown jacket that is painted and sculpted to look like leather, with a light grey collar that has a black wash, Splinter’s robe underneath with a black ribbon hanging down the front, purple gloves, a black hat with a metallic silver throwing star in the back of it, a harness that is painted in dark brown, with gold belt buckle , holsters for the knife, stakes and a quiver on the back for the arrows. The fur is painted in a dark brown with a wash, and given textures and sculpted details. The feet are wrapped in bandages, and the head sculpts come with glasses attached, and one has the hat that cannot be removed.

Splinter’s articulation includes a ball jointed head, swivel-hinged shoulders, double hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, hinged ankles and hinged toes.

Included is a black base with pegs for his feet, two additional sets of hands, 5 arrows (3 wooden tips, 1 garlic attached and 1 metal tip), a crossbow, 3 stakes with sharp points, a knife, and an additional head sculpt.

The crossbow can hold one arrow on top, but it simply rests on top and cannot be held in place to better secure it. It can also be placed in one or both hands, and is on the fragile side, and also painted mostly in dark brown to indicate wood, with some parts painted to look like metal.

The knife and wooden stakes are loose fitting in the hands, and the stakes need two in a hand otherwise it’ll fall out too easily. Both are placed in the harness on his chest, which has a secure hold on them.

Overall, Splinter as Van Helsing is a beautifully done figure, with bringing the best of both characters into this special offering. Make sure you’re picking up this line, as it’s surely something that both TMNT and horror fans will enjoy.
