Thank you to JAKKS Pacific for providing the SDCC 2017 Exclusive World Of Nintendo Super Mario and Princess Peach 8-Bit Mini-Figures 2-Pack for review.

The original Super Mario Bros. video game is one of most popular and also the fifth best selling games ever sold. The idea of two Italian plumbers saving the day is outside the box thinking and surly something that even sounds a bit absurd. In the eyes of games, the names Mario and Luigi are two of the most recognizable and fan-favorite characters in history. Since the game was launched in 1985, it sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, and is one of the best selling video games of all time.

The packaging for the World Of Nintendo Super Mario and Princess Peach 8-Bit Mini-Figures is inspired by the video game and game console itself. The original NES game console is seen on the top of the box as well as the sides. The artwork re-creating the game console is nicely detailed and even includes the power and reset buttons, along with the red light indicating there is power. The window box packaging has a television set below it that pays homage to the televisions of the 1980’s, and on the screen are the Mario and Princess Peach mini-figures in their 8-bit scenery as seen in the game. Below the window screen, are three buttons to control the television. The homage of the game console, as well as the television is one of the most interesting packaging designs ever created by JAKKS, and this is just the front. The sides are the console, and the wood of the television set that fans of those days will remember. The back of the packaging has 8-bit artwork of the game, and characters, as well as a description for both Mario and Princess Peach.

Super Mario and Princess Peach are scaled to 2.5″ tall and are sculpted in 8-bit style and deco as based on the classic NES Super Mario Bros. video game. Mario is painted in his red and green plumber uniform. The red overalls have yellow buttons on the front and as this is pixelated, these are square shaped. Princess Peach is sculpted and painted in 8-bit style, and is in her white dress with red trim. She also includes red hair and a gold crown on top of her head, that is all pixelated just as she appears in the game. Both figures are made of plastic, and are thin representations of the characters with a smooth black surface on their backs.

The original NES system’s 8-bit style remains one of the most iconic video game appearances in the eyes of gamers, and this 2-pack recreates that look extremely well and the packaging is just too cool to pass on. Fans of retro video games and World of Nintendo collectors will definitely want to add this set to their collection.
