LEGO Batman Movie 70919 – The Justice League Anniversary Party Set Review

The next wave of the LEGO Batman Movie products are available in stores, which offers new minifigures and vehicles that are based on the film. These new sets include The Justice League Anniversary Party Set (showcased in this review), Egghead Mech Food FightThe Bat-Dune Buggy, The Bat-Space ShuttleHarley Quinn Cannonball Attack, The Joker Manor, and the second wave of blind bag figures, which includes 20 characters. For those of you looking for a complete set of the 20 minifigures,  Amazon.com has a listing offering this for $89.99.

The Justice League Anniversary Party is based on the brief appearance seen in The LEGO Batman Movie, where the Justice League are throwing their 57th Annual Anniversary Party, but forgot to invite Batman. Interestingly enough, this set is the only one to not offer Batman, Robin or Batgirl, and instead focuses on only Justice League characters. With the release of the LEGO Batman Movie Minifigures Series 2, fans have the ability to re-create this classic scene from the film with almost every minifigure now being offered that was shown at the party.

Thank you to LEGO PR for providing the LEGO Batman Movie 70919 – The Justice League Anniversary Party Set and 4 blind bag packages from series 2 for review.

The Justice League Anniversary Party set features 267 pieces and is based on the scene from the LEGO Batman Movie. The set includes a DJ setup with a large equaliser panel that is made up using stickers, with a deck around it, vinyl discs with a Batman logo on each, The discs are printed onto the bricks, rather then using  a sticker sheet. The design of the set is made up of several large platforms on either side of the DJ, with a rotating stage in front, and two narrow areas that extend from the DJ deck at an angle. The rotating stage works by twisting the knob in the back, and figures can be placed on this stage for the party.

The set also includes loud speakers on either side of the DJ, a Justice League 57th Annual banner that is made up with stickers, and a rope with lights on either side that are held up by clear pieces. The platform also has various disco decorations placed on it to give it the party vibe as seen in the film, where the characters were dancing to the lights and music.

As far as minifigures go, this set offers great characters as well as updates to previous offerings that fans may already own. If you’ve been collecting the DC Comics Superhero sets over the years, you probably own most of the Justice League characters already. Included in this set are Superman, Green Arrow, El Dorado, Hawkgirl and Wonder Dog. Superman includes a new grim facial expression in this reused minifigure. Green Arrow is offered in his classic outfit that doesn’t appear to have previously been offered, as the closest figure to this one had a mustache. Green Arrow is painted in his classic green Robin Hood inspired outfit, and includes a bow and a arrow bag. The bow is brand new and offered for the first time in this release, and adds to the classic look. El Dorado gets the LEGO treatment in this set, and is painted in his classic red, yellow and green outfit. El Dorado also includes two facial expressions. Hawkgirl also makes her debut in LEGO), and appears to be based on her silver age appearance as well as a mix of a more recent comic appearance. The mask is removable, and there are two alternate facial expressions, and two interchangeable wings. Wonder Dog was also showcased in LEGO Batman Movie and was the DJ at the party. This minifigure is based on his appearance in the film and classic DC Comics, with a green cape and light blue fur.

In addition to this set, we have four blind bag figures from wave 2 we are showcasing in this review. These include Jor-El, Zod, Hugo Strange, and Killer Moth. Jor-El and Zod are based on their appearance in the LEGO Batman Movie, and also are movie inspired. Jor-El is painted in his white outfit with a black logo on his chest. He comes with a crystal from the Fortress of Solitude. Zod is based on his appearance from Super II from 1980, and is in his black outfit. He includes two facial expressions, with one of them light up red eyes. Hugo Strange and Killer Moth are comic inspired, which is a personal preference. Hugo Strange has gotten pretty popular since he appeared in Gotham, and this minifigure is in his white and black doctors uniform, with a white beard, and comes with two beakers. Killer Moth is in his purple, red, orange and green outfit, with a removable green helmet, and he comes with a blaster. Each of these minifigures also come with a display stand with a Batman logo.

Overall, the Justice League Anniversary Party Set is a fun piece to display and has a great likeness to the movie appearance. It’s also on the fragile side, more so than any other set offered in the movie line, and could break if any excess force is applied. This set however is worth picking up just for these great looking minifigures, as these are some first time offerings and new facial expressions. LEGO and DC fans will definitely want to add this to their collection, especially if you own any of the DC Superheroes sets. The series 2 blind bag minifigures are also nice additions to the collection, but you will definitely want to purchase an entire set of these.
