NECA Toys is now offering their generic version of their popular Street Scene and Building diorama that was originally offered as a San Diego Comic-Con exclusive with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles branding, that also came with the 1990 Movie Turtles. This new version works with any 6″ – 7″ scale action figure from any toy company, and any toyline(s) you collect.
Thank you to NECA Toys for providing their Originals – Street Scene Diorama for review.
Availability: March 2019
The building diorama is packaged in a box with beautiful artwork showcasing the building with silhouette of figures standing on the front, along with a view of the building in two angles and details on the front and back, and in both the day time and at night of the reversible backdrop. There is also some details on the back and dimensions. Once opened, the building comes unassembled, requiring you to use some patience while putting it together.
The building diorama stands at 28″ with the cardboard backdrop attached, or 19″ without it. It also measures roughly 12 1/2″ width by 25″ in length, and this allows you to place figures on the front of the building on three different levels, as well as inside the building. The building diorama comes with detailed instructions with step-by-step details on how to assemble this, as well a parts list. The assembly process is pretty much straight forward, with some tricky parts such as placing the clear acrylic windows inside and placing the cardboard backdrop on the back.
The building has three levels – first level, second level, and third level with the reversible diorama placed behind the building, and the figures can be placed on the dark gray sidewalk and roofs of the building. The sidewalk and roofs come loaded with sculpted detail and a rough texture that makes it look realistic, as well as the detail and paint applications on the bricks. This version of the building comes without the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles branding, and is used as a generic street building that can be used for any figure that is 6″-7″ scaled by any toy company.
There is also some difference is tooling on this building such as the second floor featuring four windows, as opposed to three, and the second lever having two windows as opposed to three, and the layout is also slightly different with the first floor door now moved closer to the edge.
The new placement of the windows and door is as shown above, along with the differences in the city diorama as the buildings are different as if its located in a totally different spot. The colors are also brighter, such as a light brown bricks, blue windows, and a light grey sidewalk and roofs.
As far as the number of figures you can place on this building is around 30 or so according to NECA, but depending on which figures you use, it’s possible more can be added depending on placement and bulkiness of the figures. Alien Xenomorphs take up more room, so you would have less room for other figures, so you might want to consider other figures such as from the Ultimate line, Predator, Terminator, and so on.
Overall, the building diorama is an excellent playset and one of the best offerings that NECA has ever offered to its fanbase. This building is available mostly at online retailers, and because of the shelf space required, you will probably not see it in stores. You can’t go wrong with picking this up to enhance your figure display and photography. If you missed out on the SDCC Exclusive, and lets face it you probably did as that was limited to 2,000 pieces, then make sure you pick this up today.
