Diamond Select Toys Marvel Select Psylocke Figure Review

Diamond Select Toys continues their classic X-Men offerings in the Marvel Select line with their latest offering of Psylocke, which is based on her 1990’s comic book appearance. Earlier this year fans were treated to Rogue as she made her debut in this line, and we are one character closer to a complete X-Men collection in this line. In recent years DST has been offering at least a few new X-Men characters each year, but there are still plenty of characters to go. Considering that Marvel Select often gets around a dozen new figures per year, getting several new X-Men characters in this line each year is a gift. Psylocke is available now at your local comic shop or online retailer as mentioned below.

Thank you to Diamond Select Toys for providing their Marvel Select Psylocke Figure for review.

Availability: August 2019

Psylocke is packaged in a standard Marvel Select packaging with a blister card featuring artwork on the cover, side, and an image of the figure and a bio of on the back.

Psylocke’s release in Marvel Select is essential to round up a nice 90’s era X-Men collection in this line, and she was one of our personal showings at this years New York ToyFair from DST. Most recently fans have been treated to other X-Men characters such as Rogue, Cable, and Beast to help round out the collection, but there are still some core characters to go, especially in the villains department as not too many of those other than Magneto, Juggernaut and Sabretooth have been offered. While DST can only make so many Marvel Select figures per year, they have been doing a great job on character selection and we’re hopeful to see them finish off this 90’s era with characters such as Iceman, Professor Xavier, 90’s Storm, 90’s Cyclops, Jubilee, Archangel, Banshee and others.

Psylocke is based on the 90’s era Jim Lee costume designs, and is sculpted and painted in a metallic purple outfit, with straps on the legs and arms. Sculpted around her waist is a pink belt with realistic folds and a wash over it, and two parts of it are going down the right side of her hip. There is also a orange belt with sculpted pouches with a red wash, and a sheath for her sword over her left shoulder. The sword is nicely done with a black handle, metallic silver blade, and gold deco. Her head sculpts have a great likeness and includes a closed mouth, and an open mouth with the psychic effect piece that is also removable.

Included with Psylocke are four sets of hands (3 open, a psychic effect hand, open fisted to hold the sword, and closed fisted), a danger room base with a weapon, a sword and an additional head.

Her articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso (limited range of motion), ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, swivel thighs, hinged and rocker ankles.

The danger room base is nicely done and has a great weapon piece to it. The sides of the base have grooves so that walls from the other bases can be inserted into it, which is a good idea. The overall design of the danger room pieces that have been coming with some of the X-Men figures (Storm, Cyclops, Gambit, Rogue and Beast) have walls that can’t connect to each other, which is unfortunate and we’ve seen DST better plan with playsets such as what they’ve done with Ghostbusters Select (rooftop diorama and the Ghostbusters Firehouse). While it’s great to have the option of a danger room playset overall, it’s not planned out as well as we would have liked, and each piece should be able to connect and offer a better display and play option.

Overall, Psylocke is an excellent figure with a great sculpt and overall character likeness. The deco came out great and we especially like the metallic deco on the outfit, as well as the great head sculpts. Fans of 90’s Marvel would definitely want to pick this up, and she is available now at your local comic shop and online retailers as mentioned below.
