The Lord of the Rings Select line continues by Diamond Select Toys and includes Aragorn and a Moria Orc, and these are inspired from 2001’s The Fellowship of the Ring. Each figure comes with build-a-figure pieces to build a 13″ tall Sauron figure and accessories. The film had originally aired in 2001 and we at the 20th anniversary of the film, so it makes sense for DST to bring back these characters with some of the best actor likenesses we’ve ever gotten, including from that old Toy Biz line. Toy Biz had a number of original lines, but LOTR is one of the few really good movies that they did such a nice job on, and as good as those vintage figures were, this line is a step up from that and offered in today’s high quality details.
Thank you to Diamond Select Toys for providing their Lord of the Rings Select Series 3 Figures for review.
Availability: January 2022
Each figure is packaged on a window box with nicely done artwork, along with windows on the sides, and images and a description on the back.
Aragorn comes in a black coat, brown button down vest, a blue shirt, dark blue pants and dark brown boots all with a wash over it. The gauntlets on his wrists are painted in black and dark brown with some detailed patterns, including a silver symbol on the sides, a gloved right hand with his fingers poking through, and a ring on his left hand. Sculpted to his waist is a holster for a sword and a Elf dagger with writing and symbols on the blade. His head sculpt includes long black hair with a wash, a five o’clock shadow, and nicely details facial details, including a silver necklace around his neck.
Included with Aragorn is the left arm and leg for Sauron, two swords, one holster for a sword, an Elfish dagger, and a lit torch.
His articulation is standard for a Select line, including a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso with limited range of motion due to the jacket, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Orc’s in this line has been needed for quite sometime and the Moria Orc fills in that gap quite a bit with the army building potential and interchangeable heads. He comes almost completely covered in armor with a black and a brown wash, chained armor around his neck that is loose, and his hips include chain armor with red trim. His skin tone is a light green with a black wash over it, which you se his toes, upper knees, elbow, neck and head. His head sculpt features pointy ears, and facial details including big eyes and a snarling mouth. His other head sculpt features a helmet and you can also see some of the facial details, but the head is almost completely covered for protection.
Included with the Moria Orc is a staff, sword, interchangeable head, and the mace for Sauron.
The Moria Orc’s articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Sauron is now complete if you own series 1-3, which includes all the parts and mace to complete this figure. He’s big, massive and menacing looking and just towers over the other characters as he stands 13″ tall and features an incredible likeness to the film. He is fully covered in armor that is painted in a silver and grey with a black wash, a cloth black cape that is attached to this back, and shoulder guards that tend to fall off easily. The armor features sculpted details and textures throughout he sculpt, which gives it a great and realistic look. The head sculpt is amazingly detailed, including the blades on it as well as the shoulder guards, and the overall likeness of the helmet matches the source material nicely.
Sauron’s articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Included with Sauron is his mace, which also have a distinct likeness and is painted in the same deco as the armor.
Overall, series 3 looks great and DST is offering such a great LOTR line that fans are hopefully buying. Aside from the great likenesses and details, that Sauron figure is truly a must-have so make sure you buy series 1-3 to complete him, all of which are available now.
