Lord of the Rings Select Wave 4 Gandalf & Uruk-hai Orc Figures Review

Diamond Select Toys Lord of the Rings Select line continues and includes Gandalf the Grey and Uruk-hai Orc figures. These figures are inspired from The Fellowship of the Ring. The film had originally aired in 2001 and we at the 20th anniversary of the film, so it makes sense for DST to bring back these characters with some of the best actor likenesses we’ve ever gotten, including from that old Toy Biz line. Toy Biz had a number of original lines, but Lord of the Rings is one of the few really good movies that they did such a nice job on, and as good as those vintage figures were, this line is a step up from that and offered in today’s high quality details.

Thank you to Diamond Select Toys for providing their Lord of the Rings Select Series 4 Gandalf & Uruk-hai Orc Figures for review.

Availability: April 2022

Each figure is packaged on a window box with nicely done artwork, along with windows on the sides, and images and a description on the back.

Gandolf the Grey is an essential part of this line, and features the likeness of actor Ian McKellen. The figure comes in a long grey robe with sculpted textures throughout it, a cape that also has sculpted textures, grey pants with sculpted folds, and black boots with sculpted laces. He also has a brown belt with a metallic silver belt buckle, and a blue strap with silver dots that connects the sheath to his waist.

The head sculpt pays a great likeness to the actor, and given a long grey beard, hair and nicely done facial details. The eyes however are painted in an upward position and not looking straight ahead, which would be fine if he was casting a spell, but it does take away from him holding additional accessories such as the sword.

His articulation is standard for a Select line, including a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed hips, hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.

Included is his hat that is placed on his head, a staff, sword and an extra set of interchangeable hand sculpts.

Uruk-hai Orc is an army building character, and comes fully armored with dark grey with a silver wash armor. On his chest is the mark of Saruman, which is a white hand print. The armor is nicely detailed with various sculpted textures depicting the likeness from the film. The red skin with a black wash is also nicely done and looks great with the armor.

The heads sculpts look amazingly detailed, and you can tell these are different characters. The helmed head is best used for army building this character, which the helmet includes the same great deco and likeness as the rest of the armor. The facial details and just as impressive, and the hair is also different and hangs down the back.

His articulation is standard for a Select line, including a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.

Included is a sword, shelf, staff and interchangeable hands. The forearm gauntlets are removable to replace it with the shied, as both will not fit.

Overall, series 4 looks great and DST is offering such a great LOTR line and we are getting a fun line here. This wave does not include any build-a-figure parts as we finished Sauron with the first three waves, so if you decided to army build this Orc, you won’t have extra parts of Sauron to worry about. Highly recommended and strongly recommend you army build the Orcs, and Goblins.
