NECA is now offering their Disney’s Gargoyles Ultimate Goliath figure based on the SEGA Genesis video game, and of one repaint that both gamers and toy collectors can appreciate. Goliath is given some new 8-bit deco that pays a tribute to his appearance in the game, and includes both folded and extended wings.

Thank you to NECA Toys for sending along their Disney’s Gargoyles Ultimate Goliath (Video Game Version) figure for review.

Availability: June 2023

Goliath is packaged in a window box with an opening flap, with artwork inspired from the original SEGA Genesis game on the cover, a video game homage on the right side, and an image of the figure on the right side. The back includes both images of the figure while paying tribute to the original game packaging. The opening flap includes another image of the figure, and on the right he is packaged in a plastic tray along with his accessories.

Goliath is given some new deco inspired from the original SEGA Genesis video game, with the 8-bit shading on the body and wings, which makes him visually quite appealing, and every aspect from his sculpt, engineering, quality and deco makes him one of the best figures of the year, which should speak volumes considering there’s the TMNT line to consider.

The 8-bit deco including the shading, with dark and light grey tones, some black on the wings, belt and hair, and a yellow belt buckle. The folded wings are repainted from the one’s that came with Bronx, and are also given the 8-bit deco, with black, and dark grey shading.

The two head sculpts are quite dynamic and represent two different sides of Goliath. The monster-like head shows his fangs and white eyes as he gets angry, while the more normal face shows his humanity side. The attention to detail is so well done, especially the paint applications and interiors of the mouth.

Goliath also includes his extended and folded wings, two sets of interchangeable hands (two closed fisted, two clawed), a bendy tail, and two sets of head sculpts.

The wings are one of the most impressive designs on a figure that NECA has put out, and these can be removed or placed back on to your liking. The wings are cast in black plastic, with the b0bit deco, including the blue shading on the front, and dark grey shading on the back. The wings are on pegs that plus into his back, which the holes on the back are hidden under his hair.

The wings are also on the light side, with a strong ABS plastic and these are long enough to look like they can actually support him in flight as seen in the cartoon, which the vintage toy did not have. This light weight helps to pose the wings and keeps them in the desired spot, rather than seeing them fall down, which might have happened if they had some weight to them. The wings have some pointy edges, and feels like it will not bend or warp, so that’s also a plus.

The amount of articulation here is extremely impressive, and the functionality of the design and how it moves is some very impressive work from the team. He also has a good range of balance and stability, and the tail is not required for this as the feet can hold him up right even with the wings extended. This helps by being light in weight, which is a plus. The joints also have not been painted, so there is no flaking that you see on some other figures, which is hopefully a new standard moving forward on all their offerings.

He is also fully articulated, which includes a ball jointed head, ball jointed neck, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, ball jointed torso upper and swivel waist, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles, and hinged toes. The tail and wings are also a swivel-hinge. The folded wings are non-articulated.

Comparing him to his first released, as well as Thailog, you see that the new deco stands out quite nicely on its own, and the dark tone works very well for this figure. The folded and extended wings are also repainted, which gives you many different possibilities for display, something that fans can appreciate.

Overall, Goliath is amazingly done, and fans are surely going to want this figure to their collection. Every aspect about this line has been well thought out and executed, especially the engineering, paint applications, and overall likeness to the quality. Goliath is an essential part of the Gargoyle’s line,  and he will surely win the hearts of collectors, as the likeness and attention to detail is just spot on. Make sure to jump in on his line as fans, especially me, have been waiting for someone to pick up this brand and make figures like this for quite sometime. You can order now at our sponsors below:
