Diamond Select Toys Lord of the Rings Deluxe Wave 6 Saruman & Samwise Figures Review

Diamond Select Toys newly released Lord of the Rings Deluxe Wave 6 Figures includes Saruman the White and Hobbit Samwise Gamgee based on 2002’s Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. These are essential offerings to an already impressive line-up of offerings, and Samwise’s release is that much closer to finishing off The Fellowship of the Ring, the group of heroic warriors, and some Hobbits that pledged to stand with Frodo and protect him on his journey to bring the Ring of Power to Mordor to destroy it.

Thank you to Diamond Select Toys for sending along their Lord of the Rings Deluxe Wave 6 Figures for review.

Availability: January 2024

Each figure is packaged in a window box, with nicely done artwork, along with windows on the sides, and images and a description on the back.

Saurman comes in a light beige robe, which has several layers all made of a soft plastic, with paint washes, and some sculpted textures and patterns on the sleeves. The front of the robe also has additional sculpted patterns, a belt with more patterns that has the skirt part around his hips and al the way down to his feet.

His head sculpt represents a decent likeness to Actor Christopher Lee, with paint washes on the skin, facial details, a sculpted grey beard with a wash, and sculpted grey hair.

Included are interchangeable arms, interchangeable hands, a staff, and the black Orb, or Crystal Ball.

Both sets of interchangeable arms have limited articulation, as they can swivel at the elbows but aren’t meant to be posed any way except the standard position. The bent arms are meant to hold the staff, and you can swap out the hands with the hand meant to hold the Crystal Ball. The staff is cast in black with a white orb sculpted on top. The Crystal Ball is shinny, and is loose fitting on the hand and it can fall off.

His articulation includes a ball jointed head, swivel-hinged shoulders, ball jointed torso, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles. The robe blocks some movement in articulation, and especially for the torso and legs its a limited range of motion.

Samwise comes in a light grey shirt, dark grey pants, a brown belt with a silver belt buckle, brown suspenders, and sculpted hair on the top of his feet. The head sculpt has a decent likeness of Actor Sean Astin, with sculpted facial details, paint washes, and sculpted blonde hair.

Samwise includes an Elven cloak, backpack, bag, a sheath for the sword, sword, shinning sword, box, hand with a glass bottle that lights up when he’s in a dark place (in the film this was used to scare away a giant Spider), and interchangeable hands.

The backpack has straps that can be unplugged and fits over his torso, and features accessories that are sculpted to it. All of which are painted, and the pots and pans are given a nice metallic deco to represent the likeness. The Elven cloak is made of a soft plastic with a wash over it, and given sculpted textures.

The sword can be placed in the sheath, and the sword is metallic silver with a black handle, and fits in the open grip hand, The sheath can be held in his hand, but cannot be placed on the body. The bag fits over his torso by first removing the head and placing it on before you put the cape on.

The shinning sword lets you know when Ocr’s are nearby, and is painted in a light blue and white deco, with a brown handle. The glass bottle is sculpted to his hand, which is a good thing as that would probably fall out easily. He also comes with a tiny box, that is painted to look like wood, with a metallic silver lock.

His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball jointed torso, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.

Comparing these figures with some additional offerings, you can tell that DST is paying close attention to the differences in heights between these characters. The line is also coming along nicely, and you are getting a great collection here.

Overall, Diamond Select Toys has come out with another great wave of Lord of the Rings figures to add to your collection, and both Saruman and Samwise are much needed additions to the line. Make sure grab them now! The only tidbit about these figures are the head sculpts on the humans, hobbits and wizards, as they are sculpted as opposed to given the digital “photorealistic” treatment as other companies have been doing.
