Shark Attack!!!!
Mattel is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Street Sharks, which made its debut in 1994 with an animated series that ran for 40 episodes, and a vintage toy line that is one of the most memorable in the 1990’s. Back at San Diego Comic-Con 2015, Mattel had also shown a slide during the MattyCollector panel of all of the brand that they were looking to bring to that online store during the time, including The Real Ghostbusters, Food Fighters, Street Sharks, Major Matt Mason, Clash of the Titans, Battlestar Galactica, and possibly other brands, but that was ultimately shut down the following year.
Street Sharks is the first of what was shown at that years panel to finally see the light of day from Mattel, and fans are in for a treat as these are retro inspired, but also given updated articulation to today’s standards, and they also keep their action feature. The first wave includes Ripster, Jab and Slash, and the second wave will include Big Slammu, Streex, which completes the team, and Dr. Piranoid, the evil Scientist that combined their human DNA to sharks and mutated them.

The packaging for each are inspired from the vintage style box, with the logo’s, artwork, and detailed instructions on the back. The figures are inside the cages packed with a plastic tray for safe keeping.
Ripster is the leader of the Street Sharks and is a mutant Great White Shark. Just like his brothers, he is given a muscular physique, with some parts of the torso are made of a soft plastic, and this allows the mouth to move up and down easier. He is sculpted in black pants, with a brown belt and shoes, and a metallic silver belt buckle. He is also in a dark blue skin tone, with a beige stomach. The attention to detail on the teeth are remarkable, which are also a soft plastic, and move up and down by pressing the finn on his back. His other feature is that he can twist at the waist, and return to the frontal position.
Jab is a Hammerhead Shark, and is given metallic gold skin, with a light grey stomach, light blue camouflage pants with black and white, and black boots. His mouth is smaller compared to Ripster, but he also has that opening mouth feature by pressing the finn back, and the other feature he can extend the top of his head by pressing the right arm back, and this will extend it outwards to strike.
Slash is one of Dr. Paradigm’s first experiments with gene manipulation alongside Slobster. He’s a swordfish that was also injected with the DNA of villains like Genghis Khan and Colonel Thomas Blood, and he transforms into an anthropomorphic fish with a drill bit on his nose that comes unassembled in the package. The drill bit is painted in a metallic gold, and he is painted in a metallic light green, dark blue suit, a symbol that is red with a black skeletal fish on his shoulders, and the top part of the head is metallic purple. The teeth are long and sharp, with some metallic purple in-between. His hands have claws, and the drill can spin by pressing the level down on his back.
Each figure comes with a cage that they are put inside the box, and the cage does not have a base. It is also said to be modular and can be placed together, but I could not figure that one out.
The figures are given the Masters of the Universe Origins style of articulation, which includes ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbow, swivel-hinged wrists, swivel waists, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, and swivel ankles.
Overall, Mattel’s Street Sharks figures are great offerings and this is a brand that is long overdue for a modern day revival. Fans of the series, and especially if you have the vintage figures, you’re definitely going to want to pick these up. The likeness and attention to detail, along with the updated articulation make these the best Street Sharks figures released to-date.
