Shark Attack!!!!
Mattel is celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Street Sharks, which made its debut in 1994 with an animated series that ran for 40 episodes, and a vintage toy line that is one of the most memorable in the 1990’s. Back at San Diego Comic-Con 2015, Mattel had also shown a slide during the MattyCollector panel of all of the brand that they were looking to bring to that online store during the time, including The Real Ghostbusters, Food Fighters, Street Sharks, Major Matt Mason, Clash of the Titans, Battlestar Galactica, and possibly other brands, but that was ultimately shut down the following year.
Street Sharks is the first of what was shown at that years panel to finally see the light of day from Mattel, and fans are in for a treat as these are retro inspired, but also given updated articulation to today’s standards, and they also keep their action feature. The first wave includes Ripster, Jab and Slash, and the second wave will include Big Slammu, Streex, which completes the team, and Dr. Piranoid, the evil Scientist that combined their human DNA to sharks and mutated them.
These figures are in-stock now at BigBadToyStore for $24.99 each, and you can grab them by clicking HERE!
Thank you to BigBadToyStore for sending along Mattel’s Street Sharks 30th Anniversary Streex, Slammu and Dr. Piranoid Figures for review.
Availability: September 2024
The packaging for each are inspired from the vintage style box, with the logo’s, artwork, and detailed instructions on the back. The figures are inside the cages packed with a plastic tray for safe keeping.
Streex is a mutant Tiger Shark. Just like his brothers, he is given a muscular physique, with some parts of the torso are made of a soft plastic, and this allows the mouth to move up and down easier. His skin tone is mostly blue, with purple markings on the forehead, finn, and arms. He also comes in black gloves with orange claws, yellow pants, neon orange knee pads, and black roller blades with teal laces and yellow wheels that rotate. The attention to detail on the teeth are remarkable, which are also a soft plastic, and move up and down by pressing the finn on his back. He also includes interchangeable hands, with long and short claws.
His articulation includes an opening jaw, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, and swivel-hinged knees.
Big Slammu is a mutant Whale Shark and the bulkiest of the Street Sharks. He has the same opening jaw feature as the other Street Sharks, and the right shoulder can be smashed downward by raising it up. He is primarily dark brown and beige, with metallic silver ovals on the top of his forehead. He also has yellow wrist bands, white pants with red stripes, blue socks, and white shoes with red stripes. The torso and head are also soft plastic, which allows the mouth to open.
His articulation includes an opening jaw, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Dr. Luther Paradigm accidentally mutated himself using Piranha DNA during an experiment, and he renamed himself Dr. Piranoid. He comes in his battle armor that has a dome around his head, and is mostly in a greenish-yellow, dark grey, metallic gold, and metallic silver. His head can rotate by pressing the button on his back, and you can see his half human, and half Piranha heads. The human head has a flesh tone, and a shell as an eye patch, and the piranha head or orange, shark white teeth, and the shell as the eye patch. There is a metallic gold piece at the center between the heads. His right arm is mechanical, with a firing missile, and his left arm has a hook that can rotate.
His articulation includes a rotating head, ball hinged left shoulder, ball jointed right shoulder swivel-hinged left elbow, , hinged right elbow, swivel-hinged left wrist, ball jointed torso, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Each figure comes with a cage that they are put inside the box, and the cage does not have a base. It is also said to be modular and can be placed together, but I could not figure that one out.
Here is a comparison of the four Street Sharks, Streetz, Ripster, Jab and Big Slammu, as well as the two villains released, Dr. Piranoid and Slash.
Overall, Mattel’s Street Sharks figures are great offerings and this is a brand that is long overdue for a modern day revival. Fans of the series, and especially if you have the vintage figures, you’re definitely going to want to pick these up. The likeness and attention to detail, along with the updated articulation make these the best Street Sharks figures released to-date.
