Mattel is now offering pre-orders of their upcoming Mattel Creations Exclusive Masters of the Universe Club Grayskull He-Ro Figure, which is the first figure offered in their Digital Membership that allows you early access to order exclusives, and other perks. He-Ro was originally planned in Mattel’s Masters of the Universe toy line in 1987, as part of their Powers of Grayskull spin-off line that was cancelled. This line was set to take place in Preternia, Eternia’s past and would have explored secrets about the source of He-Man’s power through He-Ro, a young and powerful wizard.

Club Grayskull is an annual digital membership celebrating Masters of the Universe Collectors on Mattel Creations. Club Grayskull will allow any Masters of the Universe fan to go inside the castle walls and take advantage of powerful perks, including:

He-Ro is packaged in a new type of window box for the line, which looks to be the exclusive packaging going forward for Club Grayskull offerings. The packaging includes some great retro-artwork and logo, images of He-Ro on both sides, and the back includes an action shot of He-Ro and additional characters. The box is a slip cover, and you need to lift if up to reveal the plastic tray, and the box on top of that. This box is where the staff is sword, He-Ro is inside the plastic tray, and behind him is the mini-comic.
He-Ro is inspired from the vintage toy of 1987 that was never released, and given the Origins treatment with updated articulation and style. He comes in Gold Chrome chest armor and boots, dark blue and red trunks, dark grey forearm guards that are removable, and a red cape with a sculpted texture. The He-Ro logo is on the chest that is in red and blue, and the Gold Chrome includes sculpted muscles and details. Above the He-Ro insignia, is a dark blue ball.
His head sculpt looks great and this is also vintage inspired, and he has the metallic gold headband around his head, which is over the brown sculpted hair.
He-Ro’s articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, waist rotation, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, swivel boots, hinged and rocker ankles.
Included with He-Ro is his staff, which the green gem inside. There are four parts on top that open up to reveal the gem, and he can hold the staff in one or two hands.
He-Ro uses some shared parts with existing Origins figures, including the arms, hands, and upper legs (these legs for He-Ro were used with the vintage toy-inspired He-Man, Skeletor and additional figures).
Super7 was the first company to offer a vintage inspired He-Ro figure, and this is a comparison of both figures. In 1987, Mattel had planned He-Ro in a new Powers of Grayskull sub-line to Masters of the Universe, but those plans were scrapped when the brand was cancelled. A prototype of He-Ro was made by Mattel, but it did not go into production.
At San Diego Comic-Con 2009, Mattel offered He-Ro in their Masters of the Universe Classic line, which was exclusive to the show and online afterwards. Mattel’s He-Ro figure had 3 versions, and each had a unique color gem – green, purple and red. The purple and red gems were harder to get, and the green gem was more common. To find out which version you had, you had to open the package and then the staff, as the staff was closed inside the blister card packaging. This version shown here is the green gem. This new Origins release only comes with the green gem.
Overall, He-Ro is a great offering and exactly what Club Grayskull is all about. Getting a figure in this scale from Mattel is almost 40 years in the making, and this is his third action figure ever released. He-Ro is definitely a figure that you’re going to want to add to your collection, so make sure to grab him now while he’s available!
