Takara-Tomy is now offering their Transformers Masterpiece Beast Wars Rattrap Figure, which is inspired from the Transformers Beast Wars series that ran from 1996-1999, and continued on in Transformers Beast Machines that no one wants to remember as that show was not perceived well. Beast Wars however remains one of the most memorable in the brands history. The series is renowned amongst fans and Rattrap joins an already impressive line-up of characters as they appeared in the first season. In most cases, the Masterpiece figures can cost hundreds of dollars depending on the size, but since Rattrap is smaller, he’s only $119.99 and currently in-stock at BigBadToyStore.Â

Rattrap comes in the standard Masterpiece black and white mailer box, with the item number and logo’s on all sides. Inside that box, is another box with artwork and images inspired by the classic 90’s Kenner toyline, with the DInobot eye behind him in both modes. This also includes logo’s such as the Maximal one, images of him on the sides, and a closer look at all of his accessories, more images and details on the back. Included is a Collector Card, and a sheet of instructions that’s featured in the video above.
Rattrap comes in a plastic tray along with some of his accessories, such as the beast mode head sculpt, robot mode face plates, and clips that allow him to hand on the back of Optimus Primal and on the flight stand shown in the instructions in robot mode. The blaster and both bombs are inside Rattap in beast mode.
In beast mode, Rattrap is a rat and given sculpted textures to indicate fur, with a mostly grey body with some brown wash, pink feet and black nails, a pink tail, and the head sculpt includes sculpted ears, eyes, nose and whiskers on the sides. A second head sculpt is included and the whiskers are real, not sculpted to the sides of the face. The mouth is hinged so you can open it and see his teeth and tongue.
He can also stand on his two back legs (the head was miss tranformed here and should have been pushed back more), with his arms able to be somewhat close together and his hands touching.

A clip is included so he can fit on the back of Optimus Primal, as shown. As Rattrap gives Optimus extra weight, he’s back heavy and you need to put the tail on the ground so Optmuus can stand.
In robot mode, he features an excellent likeness to how he appeared in the 90’s classic tv series, with tv-accurate colors including grey, copper, silver, red eyes and mouth. He is also back heavy in this mode, so the tail is required to be put on the ground so he can stand.

Rattrap includes three face plates that are interchangeable, including neutral, surprised and smiling.
The blaster is hidden inside his body in beast mode, and he can hold it in one or two hands in robot mode. The blaster has the Maximal logo on both sides, and tiny insects on top.
With the interchangeable face plates, you can create some poses while he’s holding the blaster as shown.
Rattrap also includes two bombs that are hidden in his forearms, which can be removed and placed inside his hands.
A comparison with some previous Rattap figures, including the vintage figure (re-issue release), 2014 Legends, and WFC Kingdom. This is the most show-accurate Ratrap figure released, and long overdue for a really good likeness and sculpt.
Overall, Rattrap is an excellent figure and fits in perfectly with the Masterpiece Beast Wars collection. It’s taken Takara-Tomy years now to finish the original Axalon crew, which Rarrap is the last one needed in the collection. They still have some ways to go before the season 1 characters are finished, and the Maximals are outnumbering the Decepticons, so hopefully Scorponok, Waspinator, Terrorsaur, Tarrantulus, Blackarachnia, Quickstrike, and the remaining Maximal’s Airazor and Silverbolt from season 1 aren’t far behind.
