Hasbro is offering a new wave of Iron Man retro carded figures that come packaged on blister cards inspired from the Mid-1990’s Iron Man animated series line. She-Hulk was reviewed, and today I’m checking out Count Nefaria and Whiplash, and this line also includes Iron Man Model 20, Iron Man Model 09, and Iron Man 01. Count Nefaria was not part of the Iron Man animated series line by Toy Biz, but Whiplash was and is most memorable in this costume. Count Nefaria made his debut in The Avengers #13 in 1965, and a wealthy supervillain and leader of an international crime family that has fought against Iron Man and the Avengers. Whiplash is a classic Iron Man villain that uses his cybernetic whip as his weapon of choice.

Count Nefaria and Whiplash are packaged on a retro inspired blister card inspired from Iron Man figures by Toy Biz in the mid 1990’s, with retro inspired artwork of this package on the front and back. These figures are comic-inspired, and not based on the vintage toyline that originally came packaged on these blister cards back in the mid-1990’s. Whiplash was the only figure in this wave that was released by ToyBiz on this blister card, but that figure had a blue outfit to match his Iron Man The Animated Series appearance, and this one is comic-inspired.
Count Nefaria comics in his classic comic-book outfit, which includes a black, white with a red belt that has a yellow and black belt buckle, and some red trim at the top of the boots and gloves. The cape is removable, and is white on the front, and red in the back, and he has a yellow strap around his torso made of a soft plastic. This classic Avengers villain doesn’t have superpowers, but did hire other villains to do his bidding.
His head sculpt is nicely done, and comes in sculpted black hair, a goatee, with grey highlights in the sides.
His articulation is also standard for the line, and includes a ball jointed head and neck, ball hinged and butterfly shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ab crunch, waist rotation, ball jointed hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, swivel thighs, hinged and rocker ankles.
Included are two sets of interchangeable hands, closed fisted and open grip.
Whiplash is also comic-inspired, and this classic Iron Man villain comes in his black and purple outfit, with a saddle sculpted around his torso that has a yellow buckle, and a non-removable cape. This character is long overdue to be put into this line so he’s a welcome addition for sure. The cape is made from a purple/pink soft plastic and is placed under the collar, and sculpted to that. The saddle fits loosely over the torso, and also cannot be removed.
His head sculpt is nicely done with most of it under a purple mask, and his green ponytail needs to be attached once taken out of package. The ponytail can also swivel from side to side.
The whip is also made of a soft plastic, and unfortunately it is not bendy do you can’t create custom poses with it. This can be placed in one or both of his open grip hands.
His articulation is also standard for the line, and includes a ball jointed head and neck, swivel ponytail, ball hinged, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ab crunch, waist rotation, ball joined hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, swivel thighs, hinged and rocker ankles.
Overall, Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Count Nefaria and Whiplash figures look great to their comic book likenesses and are surely essential additions to your Avengers and Iron Man collection. I do wish however that Hasbro would save this style of the blister card for modern updates to the vintage ToyBiz lines, but it’s still great to see characters like these made it into the line.
