BigBadToyStore is celebrating their 25th Anniversary this year and one of their popular exclusives celebrating this milestone is their Super7 ThunderCats Ultimates! Mumm-Ra the Ever Living (Black & Red Version) Exclusive Figure, which is inspired from the classic animated series and in black and red colors to match the BigBadToyStore logo. These colors also works exceptionally well as if he’s lurking in the shadows, which is something he often did in the cartoon.

Mumm-Ra is packaged in the standard Ultimates window box, with artwork and logo’s, and the back includes an image of him and a description., He comes packaged in a plastic tray along with his accessories, and a separate tray for the cape.
Mumm-Ra is inspired from the classic cartoon and comes in black and white to pay tribute to the BigBadToyStore logo for their 25th Anniversary celebration. This variant is an all-new take on this classic character and the colors work surprisingly well, given at how Mumm-Ra lurks into the shadows, the black and red gives him that appearance, which may have been the intent of this deco even though it’s a tribute to the logo colors. Super7 is known to take risks with variants of mostly A-list characters, which have been well received by fans over the years. This release is also being well received given at how incredible looking this simple yet effect colors work for him.
There is all reuse here from existing Mumm-Ra figures, including the base of the body, head sculpts, accessories and the fabric cape. Between his first release, and the toy accurate deco offering, you’re getting parts/accessories from both of these figures. which makes a great sculpt for this character. The silver emblem snake is on his chest, which shows up nicely from the black and red.
Included are both portraits that were released with the first show-accurate figure, and remain to be great sculpts. The red and yellow eyes look like they’re glowing, and the snakes on the top of the head, paint applications, and bandages are all top notch.
Also included is the cape, three sets of interchangeable hands (closed fisted, grip and open clawed), Extended Sword of Plun-Darr, Sword of Plun-Darr (toy version), and a Dagger.
The cape can be a bit of a challenge, and there are two spikes on his wrist that only one can be put through the hole on the cape. The center of the cape on top fits on the neck, after you remove the head. There are some wiring on the cape but not on the sides, so getting it to pose and not fall off the wrist spikes is challenging.
The Sword of Plun-Darr and dagger came with the toy deco version of Mumm-Ra, and the new black and red deco works well on these accessories. Both fit into his open grip hands.
The Sword of Plun-Darr comes as two halves that you put together, which is something new as the first release had this accessory glued together. It’s nice to have the option to split this accessory apart and use both halves, or combine them to form a formidable weapon you saw in the cartoon. This also fits in his open grip hands.
The black deco also has some glossy paint on the toe and fingernails, as well as parts of the helmet and bracelets. He is also fully articulated, including a ball jointed head and neck, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ab crunch, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, swivel calves, hinged and rocker ankles.
Overall, Mumm-Ra is a great looking figure and this deco works exceptionally well for the character, which actually comes as a nice surprise. The Sword of Plun-Darr being in two parts is a nice addition to this release and something that hasn’t been offered before. Mumm-Ra is certainly worth picking up and this is a version of Mumm-Ra you didn’t even know you wanted, until you get him in hand. This is certainly a nice surprise and he’s going to look great on the shelf!
