Hasbro is offering a modern update to the 1992 Transformers Generation 2 Grimlock figure, which is a repaint from the Studio Series ’86 mold. This new G2 Grimlock figure is part of the new Transformers: Age of the Primes line, which is the next offering following the end of Transformers: Legacy United. Autobot Wheelie is also repainted and inspired from the vintage toy.
Transformers Generation 2 was Hasbro’s attempt to reboot the franchise to keep it going, which started in late 1992 – 1995, and offered many different characters in bright colors. This line ultimately ended, and in 1996 fans were treated to one of the most memorable Transformers lines of all-time  right up there with the 1984’s Generation One line, which is Transformers Beast Wars (’96-’99). Transformers Machine Wars was launched in 1997, but that’s not as memorable.

Grimlock and Wheelie are packaged in a window box, with artwork on the front, sides, and images of the figures on the back. This box also has a plastic window, as opposed to plastic-less packaging that Hasbro had switched the brand over too a few years ago.
Grimlock is a repaint of the Studio Series ’86 mold, and comes in his Generation 2 colors, including dark blue, red, metallic gold, black, green, and light grey. On his chest is an Autobot logo covered by a clear chest piece. Generation 2 is known for its bright colors, and this release matches the source material very well as paying homage to the 1992 vintage toy.
The head sculpt is cast in black, with a red visor, and pays a great likeness to the characters design.
Wheelie is repainted from his vintage G1 toy, and comes in orange, yellow, black and turquoise. There is an Autobot logo on his chest, and he comes with a light grey sling shot that he can hold in either hand.

The double-barreled blaster can be stored on Grimlock’s back, specially snaps on the Dinosaur arm, or he can hold it in either hand. Wheelie can be placed on his left shoulder, and there is a peg there that plugs into the bottom of Wheelie’s leg.
Here is a comparison with the Studio Series ’86 Grimlock, and the first release of the G2 Grimlock figure, which is inspired from an unreleased figure.
In beast mode, Grimlock is a tyrannosaurs rex, with a hinged jaw, red eyes, and limited articulation (shown in the video). The double-barreled blaster can be stored on his back, and Wheelie on the back of the neck.
Overall, Grimlock and Wheelie are great repaints that pay a nice homage to the source material. The Studio Series ’86 mold is the most accurate offering of Grimlock in this modern era and this G2 offering is certainly a welcome addition. Make sure to grab him now at Entertainment Earth.
