Playmates Toys has brouht back the classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Module, which was first released back in 1990 and inspired from the classic cartoon. This is a Target exclusive in the U.S. ($42.99), and has some international availability. This vehicle is one of several new releases this year that are being brought back, including the Sewer Pipe Playset ($74.99) and Foot Cruiser Vehicle ($32.99), which are available on Amazon. These are all the same size as the originals, and not scaled down like last years Technodrome.

The Mutant Module is packaged in a box with some of the original artwork on all sides that was included in the 1990 release, which includes images of the vehicle, logo’s, and the front has some great artwork depicting Raphael running from the Mutant Module. Inside are two cardboard boxes with the vehicle and parts, a sheet of instructions, and a sticker sheet.
The Mutant Module is the same-size as the original 1990 release, and once taken out of the box it requires assemble of the stickers to be applied, and the parts and weapons to be placed on that are featured in the instructions. In the cartoon, it was called the Transport Module, and took Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady and some Foot Soldiers tunneling through Earth going up to New York City if the Tehnodrome was somewhere underneath the Earth’s crust, and onto a mission to steal something as instructed by Krang.
The cartoon also depicted this with a simpler design, and that was because it was easier to hand draw this without all the details that the toy was given.
While it’s a reissue, some of the colors have some slight changes since the original 1990 release, including a different purple, blue and grey tones, and while I don’t own the original, it’s easy to see the differences if you look it up online.
The bottom of the Mutant Module has wheels, and the tank threads do not rotate and are slightly off the floor. You’ll also see a breakdown of the accessories and parts included.
The Mutant Moduleis fully geared up, and in the video above I called out each part as the instructions has a specific name for the parts, weapons and accessories. The weapons on the top, which are called the Rotating Rear Stone Shooter and the Rock Blastin’ Missle can swivel and move a bit, but are not fully given much of a range of motion. The video above shows this better. The acrylic doors also open on the top, which allows you to place up to 4 figures inside depending on whom you choose.
The drill in the front also rotates when the vehicle is moved forward or backward, which is a great feature.
A figure can also hold the Gun Handle that I attached to the Rotating Rear Stone Shooter in the back.
The driver’s seat, which is a standing platform has a computer sticker sheet, and best used for Shredder or a Foot Soldier.
Depending on which characters/figures you place inside, it can hold up to 4, and if you want 4 they’ll be room for 4 Foot Soldiers, or 3 with Shredder. Rocksteady and Bebop take up more space.
A comparison with some figures shows you the size of the Mutant Module with the 5″ line, and this is only compatible with 5″ figures, but the Mutant Module could fit figures inside from other Turtles shows, including today’s offerings if you choose to use it for that.
The Mutant Module also has handles on the sides for Foot Soldiers, and you can place one on each side.
Overall, The Mutant Module is an excellent vehicle that is fun to play with and display. Since I never owned one back in the day, it’s refreshing to have this now, and this fits in perfectly with any TMNT collection. Make sure to grab one now!
