Takara-Tomy and Hasbro are offering a new collaboration between Transformers and Godzilla, which is part of their Synergenex line. This mold is a retool from the existing Studio Series ’86 Grimlock figure, which has already seen a number of notable repaints, but this is the first-time that this mold is offered using a character other than Grimlock.
Thank you to Entertainment Earth for sending along Takara-Tomy’s Transformers x Godzilla Synergenex Leader Class Megatron Figure for review.

Megatron comes in the black and white exclusive packaging by Takara-Tomy, with logo’s and a description of the contents on all sides. Inside, the second box includes images of the figure, logo’s and some great artwork on all sides.

Megatron is a repaint of the Studio Series ’86 mold, and is a coloration between Transformers and Godzilla. He is mostly black, dark grey, metallic silver, with some red lines on his arms, chest, metallic gold toes, and transparent blue plastic on the neck of the Godzilla head. The colors are a combination of both Megatron and Godzilla, as Godzilla is black, that’s why he’s mostly that colors, with Megatron’s influence showing with dark grey upper knees, grey feet, head and chest.

He has an image of Godzilla on the upper part of his chest, with the Transformers logo underneath it. The shoulders have deco that represent Godzilla’s rough skin, which is a dark metallic grey. Below the Godzilla image on the chest are some patterns and design, such as red, metallic silver, and blue deco. The head sculpt pays a tribute to Megatron, and has the metallic silver helmet, grey face and red eyes.

Megatron includes a double cannon blaster, with two of the three effect parts can be plugged into both blasters. The effect parts do tend to fall off easily as the peg holding them is small.

The blaster can also be placed on the Godzilla arm for storage.
In this mode, his articulation includes a swivel head, ball jointed shoulders, hinged elbows, swivel wrists, swivel waist, swivel-hinged hips, and swivel thighs.

Here is a comparison with the Studio Series ’86 Grimlock, G1 Grimlock (blue) and the first release of the G2 Grimlock (yellow) figure, which is inspired from an unreleased figure.

The Godzilla mode works well using this mold and you can clearly see the influence, especially with the head sculpt, with the sharp teeth, eyes, and the painted Godzilla rough skin on the knee in this mode. This mode is mostly black, but you do see some of the metallic silver silver from the front of the feet in robot mode on the back.
The articulation in the Godzilla mode includes a hinged jaw, hinged upper neck, swivel lower neck, ball jointed shoulders, hinged elbows, swivel-hinged hips, swivel thighs, double hinged knees and hinged toes.

The effect pieces are used as the ice breath in this mode, and the back of the neck has the transparent blue plastic as if he’s getting ready to charge his breath, and open fire as seen in the films. This is a great feature for him and they did a good job capturing that.

In this mode, the blaster can be stored on his back as shown in the instructions.
Overall, Megatron is a great repaint and this is a fun collaboration between these two franchises. The beast mode is my personal favorite and the effect parts make it that much more fun to pose and display. This is surely a Transformers figure that you need to add to your collection, so make sure to grab him now at Entertainment Earth.
