Shockwave joins Hasbro’s Transformers: The Movie Studio Series ’86 line, which is part of the 40th Anniversary of the film offerings. Shockwave transforms from a robot mode in a Cybertronian spaceship.

Shockwave is packaged in the standard window box for the line, including images, logo’s and the number of steps of transformation on the front, images on the sides, and the back includes a description, a screen shot from the movie, and a look at Shockwave in robot mode, spaceship mode, and shoulder mounted cannon mode that can be used for Onslaught and Bruticus, which is shown in the sheet of instructions.
Shockwave is based on his appearance in Transformers: The Movie, which was released in 1986 and the figure pays a great likeness to the source material. Shockwave is a heavy retooling of Transformers War for Cybertron: Siege Shockwave figure, and reuses the backpack, hose, shoulder transformation joint, biceps, hands, thighs, feet and bridge fins. The retooled smooth parts on the sculpt reveals the nice detailing, and is a much more cartoon-accurate. What has also been removed is the armor add-ons, 5mm ports on the arms, but he also keeps the same articulation as the Siege release, the spaceship vehicle, and is given retooled bridge.
He comes in mostly dark purple and light grey, with purple and silver Decepticon logo’s on his forearms, a light purple screen on his chest, pink hands, and a dark purple cable connected to the back and it connects to the back of the forearm.
His articulation includes a ball jointed head, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, hinged elbows, swivel wrists, swivel waist, swivel-hinged hips, swivel thighs, hinged knees, and swivel ankles.
Shockwave’s head sculpt also looks great and includes the translucent yellow eye ball, along with the purple and light grey hexagon shaped head sculpt.
Shockwave includes includes a blaster, which resembles his original laser gun mode. This is a reference to the episode “Desertion of the Dinobots Part 1,” where he wields a blaster version of himself in spaceship mode.
His spaceship mode features a new retooled bridge, and also a great likeness to the source material. The blaster is stored at the bottom of the figure, while the cable is plugged into the side of the bridge.
The shoulder mounted cannon mode is seen here, and not connected to Transformers: Age of the Primes Onslaught, or his combaticon Bruticus only because I don’t have this in-hand. However, the instructions (see above) shows you what this looks like, and the fact that he connects to these figures is a homage to the episode “The Revenge of Bruticus.” He can connect to the shoulder to become a large shoulder cannon, which is great!
Overall, Shockwave is an excellent figure with a great likeness to the source material, along with a great spaceship and shoulder mounted cannon modes. This is the most show-accurate Shockwave figure ever released, and fans are certainly going to want to add him to their shelves. Make sure to grab him now at BigBadToyStore for $42.99.
