Playmates Toys are wrapping up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand this year and they are going out with a bang, especially after 40 years of product that generations have enjoyed. One of their final offerings is the collaboration between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and G.I. Joe, two of the 1980’s biggest brands that took up a ton of shelf and peg space at stores like Toys “R” Us back in the day. Not only that, but both had memorable cartoons that kids grew up watching, and that’s what drove them to buy the toys.
The A.W.E. Shell-Striker pays tribute to the classic G.I. Joe vehicle and features elements with the Turltes in mind, which is also a redesign of this vehicle. The set also includes April O’Neil as she is given a crossover with G.I. Joe’s Scarlett, and this is the only female offered in the collection.

The A.W.E. Shell-Striker is packaged in a window box, with nicely done artwork and logo’s on all sides, along with images of the vehicle and April O’Neil x Scarlett, and the back features a description, more images and a bio for April O’Neil. Included is a sheet of instructions, map of the Turtles headquarters, and a sticker sheet to be applied to the vehicle.
The A.W.E. Shell-Striker has the appearance of the classic G.I. Joe vehicle (A.W.E. Striker) with updated features and themed to go along with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This dune buggy has many of the classic details as the one released for G.I. Joe, with updates such as the rims being green and red, headlights and the front featuring the mouth of a turtle, sculpted details on the hood and the back, a pizza slice flag that says We Deliver, and the missile launcher on top has a Stink Bomb missile.
Just like the G.I. Joe version, this is also a two seater with the option to fit figures on the sides and the back, as it can hold a total of five figures comfortably without over flowing it. The stickers applied gives it much more details, such as the G.I. Joe logo’s, warnings, lights, and even a license plate.
The stickers in the cockpit are already applied at the factory, so no need to squeeze your hand inside and try to apply them, which is very helpful that they did it this way. The seats themselves are pretty basic, with a yellow back, green seat with sculpted grooves, a divider, along with a joystick and a steering wheel that April can hold. The steering wheel can also turn, which is a nice tough. There is also a Shotgun Shellgun connected to a black tube, but does not have a handle that a figure can hold.
The cannon is hinged and can swivel, and the Stink Bomb can be fired by pressing down on the orange level at the top. There are also two handles that can be held by Raphael or another figure.
April O’Neil x Scarlett is a great choice for a crossover, which includes April’s yellow jumpsuit, white boots, a brown holster for arrows sculpted to her right thigh, brown holster for a sword with silver buckles sculpted to her left, a brown belt and silver belt buckle around her waist, black sleeves with the left one featuring the number 6 (for Channel 6 news), yellow gloves, and a red stripe with sculpted textures on her right shoulder, Most of the details are geared towards April, but the weapons on her thighs and the black sleeves are tribute to Scarlett.
The head sculpt looks great and is given long red hair, which is a tribute to Scarlett, with the face itself also resembling Scarlett more than April.
April O’Neil x Scarlett includes a Channel 6 Microphone and a Camera Crossbow.
Her articulation includes a ball jointed head, swivel-hinged shoulders, hinged elbows, swivel wrists, ball jointed hips, double-hinged knees, and hinged ankles.
April O’Neil x Scarlett fits best inside the A.W.E. Shell-Striker as the Turtles themselves are bulky and harder to fit.
The Turtles can also fit inside the cockpit, but it’s harder to get them in. Having them hanging on the sides and grabbing the bars on top, or placing one in the back to hold the Cannon is much easier.
Overall, Playmates Toys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and G.I. Joe crossover A.W.E. Shell-Striker and April x Scarlett is an excellent offering, and have received a lot of attention from fans and collectors due to its unique designs, attention to detail, and how they are fun to pose and display. This is an essential offering to add to your collection as it’s one of the last offerings of Turtles by Playmates Toys, and is just a fun set to own.
