Hasbro is bringing back some 2001 Robots in Disguise figures that have not been offered in 23 years as part of their Transformers: Legacy United, and Side Burn is the first of the Autobot Brothers to make a modern day revival. Sideburn is inspired from the Robots in Disguise animated series. The series originally aired in Japan and is the first originally dubbed Transformers animated series that was offered to the U.S.

Side Burn is packaged in the same window box that other Deluxe size Transformers come in, with no plastic protector or tray. The packaging includes some great artwork and logo’s, including additional characters on the left side, and images of him on the right side and back.
Side Burn is inspired from his animated series appearance, but also pays tribute to the vintage toy released in 2001. Unfortunately, my original Side Burn is buried too deep in storage to do a comparison, but this one is shorter than the vintage toy as Hasbro has been shrinking Transformers toys down a little bit in recent years. He does however have a great representation of the source material, including the details on the face, such as the gold plastic visor, engine on his chest, and his iconic flames on the car doors and sides. He comes in his classic colors, including dark blue and white, black, metallic silver and red, and gold plastic that is seen on the head and windshield (also the rear window and door windows).
The instructions also specify that the blaster can be stored on his back, and the piece that is used as the read bumper in vehicle mode can plug into the blaster.
Included is a blaster, a shield that serves as the roof, and a sheet of instructions.
His articulation includes a ball jointed head, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, hinged elbows, swivel wrists, waist rotation, swivel-hinged hips, hinged knees and hinged ankles. The shield is also on a double-hinged joint that plugs into either forearm.
In vehicle mode, you see the flames painted in a lighter blue and the attention to detail on the sculpt, including the engine on top of the hood, and the blaster can be stored on the top. The wheels can also rotate in this mode, and are plastic. The days of rubber tires from the 1980’s are long over, but it’s still missed.
Overall, Side Burn is an excellent figure that fans should be adding to their collection. This is a perfect companion parter to Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus, and Tow-Line, so make sure to grab him while you can.
