Krampus is the demonic creature that is opposite to Saint Nicholas and instead of rewarding well-behaved children with small gifts, he punishes badly behaved ones. He gets summoned to towns when a child looses their Christmas spirit, taking entire families with the help of his dark Elves, leaving the one that summoned him as the only survivor and hands them a bell with his name on it to keep. The film has become a cult classic and it entering its 10th Anniversary this year, and for the first-time, a Krampus action figure is being offered that is inspired by this film. The film originally did better than expected at the box office, making $61.5 million worldwide on a $15 million budget. In the film, Krampus had a number of dark Elves helping him abduct humans and going house to house, leaving the one that summoned him and his family last, abducting them, and heading back to his underground lair. Der Klown is packaged in a window box with an opening flap, with artwork on all sides featuring the character from old artwork of folklore, with artwork that looks like a wooden box. It also is wrapped in shrink wrap, which is not something we saw with Krampus’ packaging. The back of the box shows Der Klown in various poses and interchangeable parts. Inside, the opening flap shows an image of him, and he comes in a window box and packaging in a plastic tray along with his accessories for safe keeping.
Der Kloon is inspired by his appearance in Krampus (2015) film, and based on his attic scenes and various scenes in the film that came afterwards. Der Klown is a giant demonic evil Jack-in-the-Box toy, with a centuries old vibe to him and a wooden appearance with a painted face and body. The Jack-in-the-Box is at the end, with a non-rotating wheel, and images of Krampus on all sides. It is dark an old wooden box, with some great paint applications and artwork showing its age. His body is mostly white with the appearance of springs on the inside, orange poker dots, and white gloves. The torso comes in a dark blue blazer, with a striped shirt with three red buttons. Around his neck is a neck ruffle, which is light grey with sculpted textures.
His head sculpt looks great with that old wooden clown design, a dark red jester hat with bells, and the paint applications on the face is mostly white, with a wash, black eyes, black eye lashes and eye brows, a pink nose and orange poker dots on the chin. His ears are circular, with a darker wash inside the ear lobes.
His articulation is limited, and includes a ball jointed head, ball jointed torso, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, swivel body in the front and swivel tail.
Der Klown made his debut appearance in the film where he captures Jordan and moves very quickly as her parents run up into the attic and try to save her and shots at him, his speed, given his size, is faster than one would have expected.
Der Clown includes three interchangeable mouth pieces, one is neutral, one an open mouth with his teeth showing, and one a larger mouth with interchangeable human legs sticking out. This mouth piece here has a split chin, which is a nice touch. Also included is an interchangeable left hand, and a Handkerchief he uses to wipe his mouth in the film after swallowing Jordan.
This larger open mouth piece requires the interchangeable neck ruffle that’s flat in the front, and his chin is sticking out in front and there is a gap large enough for Jordan’s legs to be placed inside, with a hole inside the lips for the peg on the top of the legs to be plugged into.
Overall, Der Klown pays a great likeness to the source material and I for one have waited 10 years for a figure like this inspired from the film. So this release does not disappoint and has been well worth the wait. Every aspect about this figure is incredibly detailed and you can tell the design team went above and beyond with this release, giving fans the best possible likeness and accessories. Der Klown is a great addition to your horror collection, and at the very least makes a great holiday decoration.
