Hasbro are now offering their Transformers: Age of the Primes G2 Swoop and Sludge Figures, which are inspired by non-released toys and original packaging art from the early 1990’s. This set completes the G2 repaints of the Dinobots, which is an essential offering for any Transformers collection. It’s interesting that only Grimlock, Slag and Snarl were the only Dinobots released in the G2 line, while Swoop and Sludge were no where to be found. This characters are decades overdue for a proper G2 release, and for the first-time in Transformers history, you can own all five Dinobots in G2 colors in the Age of the Primes line.

Swoop and Sludge are packaged in a box with sketches, logo’s and images on all sides, and the back includes a black and grey silhouette of the characters. They are both packaged in a cardboard tray, with ties holding them in place. The sword and blaster are in the baggie taped to the side of the tray. Included is a sheet of instructions that is featured in the video.
Dinobot Swoop and Sludge are repainted from the Transformers Studio Series ’86 sculpts, and repainted using the Generation 2 deco that was never released in the early 1990’s, so this set is the first-time these characters are offered in this deco. Both figure keep all of the sculpted details used before, including grooves and attention to detail designs as seen in the Studio Series ’86 line.
Dinobot Swoop is a repaint and retool of the Studio Series ’86 figure, in G2 colors that includes neon green, neon blue, grey, red, dark blue, red and silver, and the wackiness of this color scheme fits in the overall vibe of what they were doing back in the early 1990’s. There’s an Autobot logo on the beak, as well as the back of the wings (that are covered in this mode).
The head sculpt is a retool and possibly vintage-toy inspired as what would have been if he was offered in the early 1990’s. There’s a visor in dark blue, a neon green finn, blue helmet, and silver face plate.
The wings can expand in either mode, and there is an Autobot logo’s on the back of each wing, which is hidden if it’s folded.
The blasters come as two separate parts and require assembly, and are placed in his hands, or the front of the wings. The swords are both unique, and fit in his hands or placed on the back of the wings.
Here is a comparison with his Studio Series ’86 figure. Notice the differences in deco, and the retooled head sculpt.
He transforms into a pteranodon and the beast mode is quite impressive, with a hinged jaw, hinged wings, and the beak has a hidden blaster inside as seen in the G1 cartoon (this was carried over to the G2 figure as the sculpt is reuse). The blasters can be stored on the bottom of the wings, and the swords can be stored on the back of the legs. Swoop can also stand on his feet in this mode, and his head lifts up as shown. The blasters can also be stored on the front of the wings.

Dinobot Sludge is also a repaint of the Studio Series ’86 figure, in G2 colors that includes neon orange, black, dark blue, red, and silver, with a red Autobot logo on the chest.
His head sculpt is mostly black and silver, with red eyes.
Sludge includes a blaster, which can be placed in either one of his hands.
Here is a comparison with his Studio Series ’86 release, which this G2 deco is repainted from.
Sludge transforms into a brontosaurus, which includes an Autbot logo on the top of his head. The transformation on his is also a bit more complicated compared to Swoop’s.

Overall, Dinobot Swoop and Sludge are great figures and pay an excellent likeness to the original artwork of the early 1990’s in the G2 line. This new deco warrants another purchase as there is enough new-ness here. Make sure to grab him and other figures now at BigBadToyStore!
