Hasbro Transformers Age of the Primes Voyager Class Sideways Figure

 

Hasbro’s Transformers: Age of the Primes line is getting a new character from Transformers Armada, which is non-other than Sideways, which is a Voyager Class figure. Sideways includes two mini-cons, Rook and Crosswise, who can still transform into each other to become a larger character, or each can become one of the heads for Sideways. Sideways is a modern update to his vintage toy, and can transform into a motorcycle that the mini-cons can sit on the seat and ride.

Sideways is packaged in the standard window box for the line, with artwork and logo’s showcasing the character in both modes on the front, an image of him on the left, images of the Primes on the right, and the back features a look at him in both modes, along with his mini-cons.

Sideways is inspired by his appearance in Transformers: Armada and given a modern update into the Age of the Primes line. He is mostly purple ad gold, with light grey, metallic blue, black, and there’s an Autobot and Decepticon logo’s on a panel on his chest that can manually swap between the two factions. However, the panel cannot be flipped when his head is tucked into the chest and replaced by one of the mini-cons that can form one of the three head options for him.

Sideways articulation includes a ball jointed head, swivel-hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel wrists, swivel waist, swivel-hinged hips, and hinged knees. The handle bars on the top of his head, and used in the motorcycle mode each have their own swivel joint.

The head sculpt is mostly gold, with a light blue visor, and the handles of the motorcycle stick up out to the sides.

The Autobot and Decepticon logo’s are on the chest, and the panel mentioned above flips so you can choose which faction to display him in. This is an unusual feature for a Transformer.

Mini-Cons Rook and Crosswise are two tiny Transformers with limited articulation, and can be used in a number of different ways, including before alternate heads for Sideways, and they can combine to form Combiner Mirror.

Not shown in the instructions, Rook’s legs have slots on the sides to allow Crosswise’s arms to connect to them and form a single piece that is similar to the “weapon” mode seen on the original Crosswise figure. This mode is pretty much useless and doesn’t really do anything, but it’s an option.

Combiner MIrror is given a new larger head than the mini-cons, and he can serve as the driver in the motorcycle mode.

Sideways includes two tailpipe weapons that he can hold, or place into the ports next to the heads and they look like missiles, although they do not fire  (spring loaded for example). His front and back wheels assemblies on the back as shown in the instructions, with 5 mm pegs and are easily removable.

The alternate heads mentioned for Sideways using Rook and Crosswise are shown here. These head make him look like a completely different character, each with a unique design, colors and faces.

Here’s a comparison with other Armada figures released in recent years. As Sideways is a Voyager figure, he is slightly taller than Red Alert, but shorter than Starstream, Megatron, and Galvatron.

The motorcycle mode is pretty neat, with two rotating tires, handlebars, and a seat for Combiner Mirror. The transformation may be a bit difficult the first time you transform it, and the extra parts for Rook (legs) and Crosswise (arms) can be placed on the sides with 8mm pegs in this mode. Combiner Mirror. can hold the handle bars, and be seated with his legs slightly bent, which is a nice touch. There’s also the Autobot (or Decepticon) logo/panel on the windshield so you can also choose the faction in this mode.

Overall, Sideways is an excellent figure with a great likeness to the source material and a fun and unique Transformers character to add to the collection. Transformers: Armada may not have been the best series to air on television, but it had some neat designs for the characters and many of them have become memorable overtime. Sideways came out great, and fans will surely want to pick this one up. Make sure to grab him and additional figures now at BigBadToyStore!
