Marvel’s Secret Wars was one of the most memorable story arch’s in the 1980’s, which ran from 1984 – 1985 in March Comics, and also had a great toy line by Kenner. The story puts Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other and placed on BattleWorld by the Beyonder. Hasbro is now offering a full wave of Secret Wars figures in their Marvel Legends line, which includes Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, The Beyonder, Titania and Spider-Man.
Thank you to BigBadToyStore for sending along Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Secret Wars Iron Man Figure for review.

Iron Man is packaged on a blister card with artwork and logo’s inspired from the vintage Secret Wars toy line of the 1980’s by Kenner. The back includes an action shot of Iron Man, a description, images of the wave, and instructions of the shield that includes a hologram. It should be noted that the 1980’s Kenner figure also had several comic panels on the back of the package of Iron Man aiding Spider-Man.
Iron Man pays tribute to the classic Secret Wars action figures by Kenner, but this figure is also a reuse of an existing Iron Man figure that came in the Mr. Hyde build-a-figure wave. He comes in his classic red and yellow armor and is basically the same figure as what has come before, with new accessories and new black lines with white pupils in the eyes, and a black line for the mouth. This is still a great homage to the vintage figure, even though the hips have parts that the vintage figure did not have, and the Arc ReActor is the wrong color (it’s blue rather than the vintage toy was given yellow).
His articulation includes a ball jointed head and hinged neck, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ab crunch, waist rotation, ball joined hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Iron Man includes a total of 5 interchangeable hands (closed fisted, blast effect, and right open grip), two blast effect pieces, two smoke effect pieces, roller blades, blaster, a shield with a hologram, and an interchangeable Secret Wars 40th Anniversary cardboard piece for the shield.
The accessories all work great for the figure and there’s a lot of different option to pose and display Iron Man. Interestingly enough, the vintage toy from Kenner only came with the shield, hologram and the blaster.
The shield includes a hologram what shows Iron Man, and Tony Stark. You can also open up the shield and replace the hologram with a Secret Wars piece.
Even though Iron Man is a reuse, it’s still a great figure and pays a great homage to the vintage toy of the 1980’s. This is a comparison to some recent Iron Man figures. If you have the Iron Man figure that came in the Mr. Hyde wave, you’ll just be getting new facial details such as black and white eyes, and a black line for the mouth. I just wish that they would have payed more attention to the vintage toy and made the Arc ReActor yellow.
Overall, Iron Man is a great figure and a really good homage to the vintage 1984 figure by Kenner. The shield is my personal favorite accessory and makes him stand out to what has come before. Make sure to grab Hasbro’s Secret Wars wave at BigBadToyStore!
