Mattel is offering a new wave of their Cartoon Collection sub-line in Masters of the Universe: Origins, which includes Whiplash from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Bo and Shadow Weaver from She-Ra: Princess of Power series that aired in the 1980’s. As these are cartoon based, their designs are different than the vintage toys, and this was because back in the 80’s everything was hand drawn, and it was easier to design characters with less detail and more simplistic as every slide was drawn.
Thank you to BigBadToyStore for sending along Mattel’s Masters of the Universe: Origins Cartoon Collection Bow, Shadow Weaver & Whiplash figures for review.

Each figure is packaged on the standard Origins-style blister card, with the appropriate logo’s on top, Hordak above that, Castle Grayskull, and the back includes more great artwork. Shown below that is a look at this wave, and to the right of that is a look at their features. Included is a sheet of instructions, and the Final Fright mini-comic.

Bow is inspired by his appearance in the She-Ra cartoon of the 1980’s, and comes in his classic outfit, which includes dark blue pants, black belt, metallic orange boots, bracelets, and there is an orange circle on the front of the belt. The cape is mostly red and given a sculpted texture, and the front part of it over the chest is metallic orange, white and given a red heart.

His head sculpt is given a great likeness to this cartoon appearance, and includes red sculpted hair and a mustache, nicely done facial details that includes painted eyes and eye brows. The hair is also given a sculpted grooves to give the impression of hair, which is a nice touch.

Included with Bow is his bow and arrow. The arrow cannot connect on the bow, unfortunately, and can only be placed in his hand. It’s loose fitting in his hand as the arrow is smaller, so it will fall off easily if you aren’t careful. The bow includes a horse design on the top, which is a tiny detail but defiantly makes it look more appealing.
He is also fully articulated, and includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, swivel calves/boots, hinged and rocker ankles.

Here is a comparison of Bow with She-Ra, and this is the first-time the two are in a toy line together since Masters of the Universe Classics.

Shadow Weaver is also inspired by her appearance in the classic She-Ra cartoon of the 1980’s, and comes in her pink robe, with the skirt part being a hard plastic, and the cape is made of a soft plastic. She does not have legs or feet, which has been replaced by the long skirt that is hollow on the inside. She is given a Horde logo on her lower abdomen, which is a dark red, and her hands are given a greenish/yellow skin tone.

Her head sculpt is hooded, and her face is mostly black, with yellow eyes.

Shadow Weaver includes includes a wond, which is mostly grey with some black, and the Eldritch Book of Spells, which is mostly green with some yellow patterns and black. The pages are given images and lines that are you are not able to read, which are supposed to be spells.
Her articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, and swivel waist. The legs and feet were replaced by a non-articulated skirt.

Here is a comparison of Shadow Weaver with her 7″ scale Masterverse offering, and Cartoon Collection Leech, Grizzlor and Hordak figures.

Whiplash is probably given the best likeness of the three, and comes in a light green skin tone, with a dark green torso and tail, blue shorts with a green belt, blue boots and bracelets. The tail is bendy and requires assembly from the package, and has sculpted grooves, scales and details, and is twisted towards the bottom.

His head sculpt looks great, and he is given two shark teeth, painted eyes and eye brows, and a dark green fin on the top.

Included with Whiplash is the rocket launcher from the episode “The Betrayal of Stratos” in the original He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon. This is mostly light grey, white with an orange tip. It can be held in one hand only.
His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, swivel waist, ball jointed hips, swivel-hinged knees, swivel calves/boots, hinged and rocker ankles. The tail is non-articulated and only bends.
Overall, all figures are an excellent choice for this line and a great likeness to how they appeared on in the 1980’s cartoon. This is definitely a wave that you’re going to want to add to your Cartoon Collection figures. Make sure to order now at BigBadToyStore!
