Hasbro is offering their latest Spider-Man Retro card wave, which are all based on their appearances in Marvel Comics. This wave includes Spider-Man 2099, Uncanny Spider-Man (Nightcrawler), Spider-Venom, Owl, Hypno-Hustler and Cardiac Figures. Cardiac first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #342 in 1990, and is a cyborg vigilante and former physician who fights against corporate green and injustice, and uses lethal method to achieve his goals. Interestingly enough, the character did not appear on Spider-Man: The Animated Series, but the blister card he comes in is made to pay tribute to characters and figures that were released by Toybiz, that will inspired by their appearance on that show at the time. As Cardiac did not appear in that cartoon, this is more of a “What If” release, as he also did not see a release by Toybiz back in the 1990’s.

Cardiac comes on a blister card, which pays tribute to Spider-Man the animated series, which was a cartoon series line by Toybiz between 1994-1998. The front includes the Spider-Man logo, Marvel Comics logo, an image of the character, and the retro backdrop. The back includes images of the characters, a bio, a look a the rest of the wave, and the retro backdrop and design. Hasbro needs to save this style of packaging (ToyBiz retro) for modern updates to figures that ToyBiz themselves put out from this cartoon, and not use it whenever they want because they can. To the fans that know Marvel during this era, it doesn’t look right, but at least the packaging does look cool regardless of the character they put inside in.
Cardiac comes in his white and dark blue cyborg outfit, with white wave lines over the wides of the chest and back, and the front and back of the legs that are designed over the blue parts. The shoulder pads are made of a soft plastic, which allows the shoulders to have the full range of motion. He also has white knee pads, white boots, white gloves, and white pouches around his thighs and boots.
His head sculpt is mostly dark blue, with white wave lines, white eyes, and a grinning mouth showing his white teeth.
Cardiac includes two sets of interchangeable hands (right closed fisted, left neutral, and a set of open grip), a Beta Staff, and a blast effect that is split apart in the package, and can clip onto his wrist or staff.
His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, ball joined hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, hinged and rocker ankles.
Here is a comparison of Cardiac with some of the retro-inspired Spider-Man the Animated Series figures. As this figure is comic-inspired, he can fit well with both lines, as the colors and character design does have the animated appeal.
Overall, Cardiac is an excellent figure with a great likeness to his comic appearance and it’s great to have something new added to the Spider-Man roster. Make sure to grab him and additional figures now at Entertainment Earth!
