Hasbro is offering their latest Spider-Man Retro card wave, which are all based on their appearances in Marvel Comics. This wave includes Spider-Man 2099, Uncanny Spider-Man (Nightcrawler), Spider-Venom, Owl, Hypno-Hustler and Cardiac Figures. Spider-Man 2099 is a futuristic version of Spider-Man named Miguel O’Hara, a geneticist that attempts to recreate the abilities of the original Spider-Man in other people, and later suffers a related accident that causes half of his DNZ to be rewritten with a spider’s genetic code. Interestingly enough, the character did not appear on Spider-Man: The Animated Series, but the blister card he comes in is made to pay tribute to characters and figures that were released by Toybiz, that are inspired by their appearance on that show at the time. As Spider-Man 2099 did not appear in that cartoon, he did get two notable releases by ToyBiz, including a 1996 release in the 5″ line, and a 1997 release in the Marvel Universe 10″ line. This Marvel Legends release appears to pay tribute to the vintage 1996 5″ figure, but the packaging he comes with now only pays tribute to the Spider-Man the Animated Series line, while the 1996 figure came in a special blister card that was part of a Special Collector Series line.
It should also be noted that Hasbro has offered this character before on a similar blister card, but this releases features better deco and a much better likeness.

Spider-Man 2099 comes on a blister card, which pays tribute to Spider-Man the animated series, which was a cartoon series line by Toybiz between 1994-1998. The front includes the Spider-Man logo, Marvel Comics logo, an image of the character, and the retro backdrop. The back includes images of the characters, a bio, a look a the rest of the wave, and the retro backdrop and design.

Spider-Man 2099 uses the modern Marvel Legends body, with a new head, cape, hands, possibly the upper arms and shoulders, and forearm with the spikes. The body is lean and muscular just as a Spider-Man figure should be, with sculpted veins on the arms. He comes in a dark blue and red costume, with the chest featuring his insignia, red stripes at the center of the arms which ends with a triangle on the hands. The cape is removable, and is torn with webbing and sculpted detail and textures.

His head sculpt is also masked, with dark blue and a red design around the eyes and the sides of the nose.

Spider-Man 2099 includes three sets of interchangeable hands (closed fisted, wall crawler and clawed), allowing many different option to pose and display him.
His articulation includes a ball jointed head, ball hinged and butterfly shoulders, swivel biceps, double-hinged elbows, swivel-hinged wrists, ball jointed torso, lower ab crunch, ball joined hips, swivel thighs, double-hinged knees, swivel calves, hinged and rocker ankles, and hinged toes.

Overall, Spider-Man 2099 is an excellent figure with a great likeness and an excellent update to what’s come before. It turns out that you do need at least one more Spider-Man 2099 figure in your collection, and this is it. Make sure to grab him and additional figures now at BigBadToyStore!
